Getting More Calls From Nearby Customers

Most people look for a plumber when something has already gone wrong. A pipe is leaking, a water heater has stopped working, or a drain will not clear. In that moment they pick up a phone, search for help nearby and call one of the first businesses they find. For a plumbing company, being one of those first businesses is worth more than almost any other kind of marketing.

Being found in local search is not a mystery, and it does not take tricks. It mostly comes down to giving search engines and customers clear, consistent and trustworthy information about who you are, where you work and what you do. The steps below are the basics every plumbing business can handle, whether the owner does the work or a staff member takes it on.

Start with your business profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in the map results and beside the regular search results. Claim it if you have not already, and fill in every field you can. Choose the primary category that best describes your business, and add secondary categories only where they truly apply. List the services you offer in the plain words customers use, such as drain cleaning, water heater repair or leak detection.

If you travel to customers instead of having them visit you, set a service area rather than showing your street address. Keep your hours accurate, including any emergency hours, and update them for holidays. A customer who calls at night and gets no answer will rarely try a second time.

Photos and regular updates help as well. Pictures of your vans, your team and your finished work show that the business is real and active. Short posts about seasonal problems, such as frozen pipes in winter, give people a reason to choose you when the problem arrives.

Reviews matter a great deal for plumbers, because customers want to know they can trust the person coming into their home. Ask every satisfied customer for a review, make it easy by sending a direct link, and reply to reviews, good and bad, in a calm and professional way. A thoughtful reply to a complaint often does more for your reputation than one more glowing review.

Make your website do its part

Your website supports everything your profile does. Each main service deserves its own page that explains the problem, how you fix it and how a customer can reach you. A single page that lists every service in one paragraph gives search engines very little to work with, and it gives customers very little reason to call.

If you serve several towns or neighborhoods, mention them naturally on your site, and consider a page for each major area where you can say something specific about the work you do there. Avoid copying the same page and changing only the town name, which helps no one.

Put your phone number at the top of every page and make it easy to tap on a phone, since most urgent searches happen on a mobile device. Make sure the site loads quickly and is easy to read on a small screen.

Tell visitors plainly what happens when they call. Say whether you offer emergency service, which areas you cover and how soon someone can usually come out. Customers in a hurry want to know right away whether you can help them, and a page that answers those questions keeps them from going back to the search results to try the next name on the list.

Finally, keep your business name, address and phone number the same everywhere they appear online: on your website, your business profile, directories and social media pages. Small differences, such as an old phone number on a directory you forgot about, can confuse customers and search engines alike. Set aside an hour to search for your business name and correct anything that is out of date.

None of this happens overnight. Local SEO is steady work, and results usually build over months rather than days. But a plumbing company that keeps its information accurate, earns honest reviews and explains its services clearly will be in a much stronger position the next time someone nearby searches for help.
